Jacopo After 8 months!

My life in Lisbon still goes on, still experiencing the Portuguese culture deeper and deeper. The winter in Lisbon has been really mild, with very nice weather and temperatures above the average. This gave me the chance to wander around in Lisbon more and more, discovering new parts of the city and unexpected places, like the Belem monument, built to commemorate the Portuguese discoveries.

This picture doesn’t bring justice to the real size of monument. It’s tremendously huge!

Taking advantage from this nice weather, Lisbon can also offer more interesting places, which are in contrast to the ordinary Lisbon appearance. The Portuguese capital is not only old buildings and nostalgic streets, but it’s also modernity and future. This aspect is perfectly represented by Parque dos Naçoes, built for the Expo ’98. Far from the centre, this huge square, surrounded by trees, parks and just next to the river, wants to represent the modernity of Portugal with the union of all the nations in the world, with a flag for every country in the world.

Despite the mild weather, the Portuguese spring has been crueler, with lots of rain and wind, but Lisbon is very close to the ocean, so it’s normal to have this crazy weather J

So, what about searching for a shelter to hide from this bad weather? These shelters are Portuguese “tascas”, typical restaurant with delicious local food. Portuguese cuisine is really good and I really love it, I don’t miss anymore (almost) the Italian cuisine :P

There are a lot of options, but my favorite one is Bacalhau á Brás, simple but very tasty, one of the main dishes of Portuguese cuisine.

 But the list of Portuguese gourmet is very extensive, but there’s still a lot of time to try more food J

And now with the spring that is ending, let’s wait for the Portuguese summer! :D

Jacopo - Check-In EVS Volunteer

Hello everybody! I’m Jacopo, an EVS volunteer from Italy. It’s been 3 months I’m in Lisbon and 9 more months are ahead of me.

My first impact with the city was strange. People and habits are very similar from where I come from, so it was not a big cultural shock for me. Lisbon is a peculiar city, unique in its style, with its “crumbling” charme.
Even if I came in October, the weather was really nice so I even got a chance to swim in the ocean for my first time !
During my three months I had many occasion to get lost in the city that reminds me a lot of my place.

One thing that I appreciated in Lisbon it’s the melting pot that you will find in this city. People all over the world live here, attracted by the positive vibrations of this city, so even if you are foreigner, you don’t feel this at all, instead you feel part of the world !
Another really nice thing of Lisbon are the miradouros, where you can basically see the whole city
below you.

But Lisbon is not only about having fun! My volunteering in Check-IN has been really various these months, with tasks such as sending emails, searching for partnership, local events promotion and creation and even postcard decoration.
So, let’s see what Lisbon has in store for me for the next months, waiting especially for the spring!

AgrotEvS - Jéssica

"Cheguei a Kompoi dia 20 de novembro de noite, sem grande noção do que me rodeava… Quando acordei na manhã seguinte a primeira coisa que fiz foi ir até ao quintal para me familiarizar com a casa e deparei-me com a vista mais incrível de sempre! À minha frente campos de oliveiras, um oceano azul e uma montanha gigante do outro lado… Literalmente de cortar a respiração. A partir desse momento, soube que estava no sítio certo! Este SVE meio que “caiu do céu”, mas a vida é assim mesmo, cheia de surpresas!

Durante a primeira semana do SVE fizemos várias atividades para o grupo se conhecer e também para conhecermos melhor o projeto e quem nos coordena. Somos um pequeno grupo de treze pessoas vindas da França, Polónia, Croácia, Suécia, e eu de Portugal. Temos um coordenador e uma ‘mentora’ incríveis, o Giannis e a Fotini, e até agora tudo tem corrido tranquilamente!

A vila é um local pacato e todos os habitantes são supersimpáticos! O Sr. Yorgos é, sem dúvida, o mais atencioso! Levou-nos à sua horta, já nos trouxe azeitonas de todas as qualidades, fez-nos peixe grelhado no “tasco” – vem-nos convidar a casa para irmos com ele beber vinho – e é o melhor contador de histórias!

É também de destacar o facto de que aqui, tudo se faz à boleia! Hitchhike para o supermercado tornou-se hábito, e no primeiro dia de trabalho também o conseguimos!

Já tinha tido a experiência de vindimar e de apanhar maçãs e peras, agora junto a de apanhar azeitonas! São bastantes as tarefas a desempenhar, mas isso torna tudo mais dinâmico e o tempo passa a correr! É mais fácil do que julgava, e é terapêutico e gratificante! Ajudamos os produtores locais com menos recursos, e estes, mesmo sem terem a obrigação de nos dar nada, preocupam-se sempre com o que nos dar de comer… venham as churrascadas! Nós vamos continuar a dar o nosso melhor.

E isto é o que vos tenho a apresentar por agora… falta apenas dar-vos a conhecer a gata que nos decidiu adotar e à qual demos o nome de Orea, que em grego significa Bonita.

Muitas outras atividades ainda irão decorrer, mas tudo a seu tempo que ainda faltam três semanas e aqui a vida é sigá sigá (levada com calma)…"

ActiveEVS: Leonor

Dois meses após o início do Serviço Voluntário Europeu da Leonor em Szczecin na Polónia, ActiveEVS, aqui estão algumas das suas palavras sobre o seu projeto:

"Dois meses já passaram desde o início do meu EVS em Szczecin. Durante este tempo já pude partilhar, dentro e fora do meu local de trabalho (o jardim-de-infância), algumas das minhas valências e conhecimentos: tive, por exemplo, a oportunidade de organizar e dar, em equipa, um workshop de primeiros socorros e, no mês de trabalho que agora completo no jardim-de-infância, fiz com as crianças uma actividade onde apresentei o meu país e alguns aspectos da minha cultura. A par disto, o trabalho com as crianças no dia-a-dia tem sido um incrível e feliz processo de aprendizagem. O mesmo se aplica a todas as experiências pelas quais tenho passado, independentemente do seu local e contexto: tenho tido o privilégio de receber formações muito interessantes e esclarecedores sobre vários temas, e o gosto de reflectir e aprender sobre tantas coisas diferentes através de enriquecedoras partilhas e trocas directas de ideias e experiências, neste grupo de pessoas tão diversicado e multicultural. Tanto a nível interno como "externo", em momentos de superação e não só, sinto que nesta experiência tão imersiva todos os dias cresço, me desenvolvo e descubro melhor como pessoa, e é com muito agrado que vejo que tenho à minha volta a abertura para dar e transmitir aos outros tudo o que eu desejar!"

"Two months have passed since the beginning of my EVS in Szczecin. During this time, I have been able to share some of my skills and knowledge, inside and outside my work place (the kindergarten): for example, I had the opportunity to organize and give, in a team, a first-aid workshop and, in the month of work that I now complete in the kindergarten, I have done with the children an activity where I presented my country and some aspects of Portuguese culture. In addition, working with children and the teachers on a daily basis has been an incredible and happy learning process. The same applies to all the experiences I have been through, regardless of their place and context: I have had the privilege of receiving many interesting and enlightening trainings on various topics, and the delight of reflecting and learning about so many different things, through enriching direct exchanges of ideas and experiences in this diverse and multicultural group of people. Both internally and “externally”, in overcoming moments and not only, I feel that in this immersive experience every day I grow, develop and discover myself better as a person, and I am very pleased to see that I have around me the openness to give and transmit to others everything that I wish!"

EVSolvin: Salónica - Isabel Tootill

A Isabel já começou o seu projeto de SVE em Salónica, Grécia, aqui estão algumas das suas palavras sobre os primeiros dias desta experiência: 

"Em 5 dias, a palavra «Salónica» foi substituída por «Thessaloniki» e o português deixou, praticamente, de fazer parte dos meus dias. Estou a 3070 quilómetros de casa… longe da minha cultura, da minha língua, das minhas pessoas… mas estou a ganhar.

Aqui, em Thessaloniki, tenho muitas culturas, muitas línguas, muitas pessoas. Tenho um propósito. Aqui, em Thessaloniki, tenho Turquia, tenho França, tenho Itália, tenho Bélgica, tenho Inglaterra, tenho Portugal. Aqui, em Thessaloniki, tenho um mar que muda de cor diariamente, tenho um céu que passa do azul ao cinzento em meia hora, tenho a fotografia, a escrita, a literatura e o cinema. Aqui, em Thessaloniki, tenho a novidade, tenho projetos, tenho viagens. Aqui há sempre música, alegria, revolta, discussão e amor. Há sempre atividade. Há sempre conversa. Há sempre interesse. Há sempre alguém. 

Antes da minha partida, ou da minha chegada, tudo me era difícil de imaginar. Vivi um mês na descrença, na insensibilidade, na névoa. Mas agora, 5 dias depois, não me custa, nem um bocadinho, imaginar os próximos 6 meses. Tudo me é familiar, apesar dos 3070 quilómetros. Sei o que ficou, sei o que tenho, estou a descobrir ao que vou." - Isabel Tootill

"In only five days, the word «Salónica» was replaced by the word «Thessaloniki», and the Portuguese language stopped take part in my days, anymore. I am 3070 kilometres away from home… far away from my culture, my language, my people… but I am gaining.

Here, in Thessaloniki, I have a lot of cultures, a lot of languages, a lot of people. I have a purpose. Here, in Thessalonki, I have Turkey, France, Italy, Belgium, England, Portugal. Here, in Thessaloniki, I have a sea that changes its colour daily, I have a sky that goes from blue to gray in half an hour, I have photography, writing, literature and cinema. Here, in Thessaloniki, I have novelty, I have projects, I have trips. Here there is always music, joy, uprising and love. There is always activity. There is always conversation. There is always interest. There is always someone.

Before I left, or before I arrived, everything was hard to imagine. I lived one month in disbelief, insensibility and mist. But now, 5 days later, it is not hard for me to imagine what the next 6 months will be like. Everything looks familiar to me, despite the 3070 kilometres. I know what I left, I know what I have, I am finding out what I am going for." - Isabel Tootill

Hoje, dia 7 de Novembro 4 jovens portugueses partem para a aventura através do projeto de Serviço Voluntário Europeu - EVSolvin durante 6 meses! 

A Maria e o João vão para Vrginmost, Croácia

A Luísa e o Tomás vão para Salónica, Grécia

Durante os dias 2 e 3 de Novembro a Equipa da Check-IN fez uma formação antes da partida dos voluntários. Nesta formação foram utilizados métodos dinâmicos como a educação não-formal, atividades de team-building e a troca de experiências. 
Durante a noite de 3 de Novembro, os voluntários fizeram também uma ação de voluntariado no terreno em Lisboa!

"Tudo começou ainda em Portugal, dia 2 de Novembro de 2017. 

Reunimos o Tomás, a Isabel, o João, e a Maria do Carmo para um entendimento sobre o que se passará nos próximos 6 meses.

Somos o 1º grupo que partirá como parte do projecto EVSolvin, em busca do auto-conhecimento e reflexão sobre a nossa visão do mundo. 

 Estes 2 dias, coordenados pelo Isaque, António e Cláudio, foram uma preparação para a Grécia e a Croácia que tanto ansiamos!

Entre desafios e troca de ideias, discussões e reflexões, jogos e convívio, esta quinta e sexta-feira resultaram num esclarecimento do que aí vem.

A vontade e o entusiasmo são gigantes, só nos resta ir , viver e aproveitar ao máximo!

MY EVS EXPERIENCE - How to rediscover yourself in a different country

It is very common, nowadays, for young EU citizens to feel a bit lost once they have obtained their University degree, once they have reached a goal that took years of planning, commitment and, let's say it, sacrifice. That inebriating feeling of endless job possibilities is quickly overcome by uncertainty and anxiety, especially when your ambition makes you want to reach for the stars, but your impatience transforms any challenge into an insurmountable obstacle.

I do not have any data to confirm how common these feelings are amongst my peers, but I am sure that was my state of mind when I decided to apply for EVS in Portugal.

 

After more than 3 months working in Check-IN, a non-profit organisation that promotes youth mobility and non-formal education, I can say that I am very grateful for this experience. I am given the opportunity to enhance my administration and communication skills in a very friendly and openminded environment, I am growing more and more interested in how EU institutions work and I am becoming more knowledgeable about EU project management. Thanks to my EVS, I am figuring out what my next step is going to be, and I am sure I will be able to make a more accurate decision.

Needless to say, living in Lisbon has also reawakened my passion for culture, music and anything in between! This vibrant city has so much to offer, it is hard not to fall in love with it. It is so welcoming and beautiful, that it attracts people from all over the world, with different talents and points of view. This also gives me a chance to get to know different opinions and, consequently, to reinforce or modify mine. 

Truth is, sometimes you just need to be positively shaken up, you need to be reminded of how far you can go, how much you can accomplish. The daily challenges you take on in a foreign country, from the bureaucracy to an unknown language to understand, are a simple way to rediscover yourself under a different light, a way to learn something new about who you are and what you want.

Although what I am stating has a strong individualist approach, I cannot overlook the importance of my daily interactions with other human beings. This EVS has given me the chance to meet wonderful souls, friends and colleagues that are the main reason why my experience in Lisbon is so fulfilling.

Erasmus+ projects, such as EVS, contribute to strengthen the ties amongst EU citizens. A new culture to explore is a great way to broaden your horizons and I encourage whoever enjoys taking on challenges and learning more about themselves (and others) to apply for European Voluntary Service. Get ready to be shaken up.
